NYT Connections is a daily word puzzle by The New York Times that requires players to classify words into four thematic categories.
Yesterday’s puzzle featured words like Purl and Pentacles, which were challenging to categorize into groups.
Similarly, in today’s puzzle with a 4/5 difficulty, I struggled to categorize Jones and Wick, finding them challenging.
Solutions For Today’s NYT Connections (May 8, 2025)
As always, you begin the game by reviewing 16 words to identify those connected by a common theme.

In Connections, we sort words into four categories: Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple, with each category becoming progressively more difficult.
Upon examination, I identified four words associated with putting thoughts into written form.
Therefore, the Yellow group is labeled “Commit to Paper,” comprising the words Author, Compose, Pen, and Write.

Today’s puzzle was one of the more difficult ones, as I spent a lot of time brainstorming all the possible groups.
Finally, the words Candle, Chop, Joy, and Yard formed the purple group, labeled “____ stick.”
It consisted of various words that are prefixes to “stick” and form meaningful words when combined with it.

This completes half of the puzzle, with eight words successfully categorized into two distinct groups.
After some trial and error, I was able to decipher the third group, successfully identifying its connections.
You can place Cup, Dice, Pencil, and Scorecard in the same category, as these are essential items for playing Yahtzee.

The green group in today’s Connections is appropriately named “Needs for Playing Yahtzee.“
Jones And Wick Meaning In NYT Connections
Jones refers to a fixation or compulsive desire for someone or something, typically a drug; in other words, an addiction.
Similarly, the general definition of “wick” is the act of absorbing liquid from something and drawing it away.

As the puzzle is designed to confuse players by including words with multiple meanings, in today’s NYT Connections, Jones and Wick refer to popular Hollywood action heroes, Indiana Jones and John Wick.
Similarly, the remaining words Bond (James Bond) and Ocean (Danny Ocean) also reference action heroes, completing the group “Heroes of Action Movie Franchises.”
Here is the final list of words and themes, along with their difficulty levels, for today’s NYT Connections.
- Commit to Paper (Yellow): Author, Compose, Pen, Write
- Needs for Playing Yahtzee (Green): Cup, Dice, Pencil, Scorecard
- Heroes of Action Movie Franchises (Blue): Bond, Ocean, Jones, Wick
- ____ Stick (Purple): Candle, Chop, Joy, Yard
