Level Scaling Mechanics In Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion Remastered

Improved or still broken?!

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Level scaling still has problems and creates balance issues, making the game harder without truly improving the player’s strength.
  • Oblivion Remastered improves the leveling system by making stat gains like health, magic, and stamina smoother and more rewarding.
  • The level scaling of loot and enemies remains mostly unchanged, causing some quests to reward weaker items based on your level.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is a modern version of Oblivion that retains the core gameplay mechanics while enhancing other aspects.

Although the remake significantly improves certain features and makes the game fairer, its level scaling remains a disappointment.

In Oblivion Remastered, level scaling means that enemies, character stats, and loot, like weapons and armor, change depending on your character’s level.

Level Scaling In Oblivion Remastered

Level Scaling may sound like a good idea to make the game more balanced, but it does not work well.

In fact, in the original game, many players felt like the more they leveled up, the less fun the game became as the enemies grew stronger, but not their characters and weapons.

Some players found that it was better to stay at level 1 and just increase their weapons or magic skills. In this way, players could grow their power while the enemies stayed weak.

Furthermore, this trick still works in the Remastered version, and that shows the scaling has not really been fixed.

Just like the original game, mods might be your best option if you truly want a balanced experience.

Change Made To Level Scaling In Oblivion Remastered

Oblivion Remastered did improve some parts of leveling. Your character now gains stats in a smoother and rewarding way.

Further, you gain health, magic, and stamina as you level up, making it an upgrade over the original.

Players also gain Virtues as they level up, which can be used to upgrade attributes like Strength, Agility, and Luck.

However, the level scaling of loot and enemies appears to be mostly unchanged.

For example, if you finish the Chillrend quest at level 1, you get a level 1 sword that deals 5 frost damage.

But if you wait until you reach level 25 to do the same quest, you will get a stronger version of the sword.

As a result, completing quests early can leave you stuck with weaker items for the rest of the game.

Finally, Oblivion Remastered is better in many ways, but it still has the same level scaling problems.
