Gerson Boom was a well-known character in Undertale, but in Deltarune, he has already passed away.
In Deltarune Chapter 4, Gerson appears again, not as a person, but as a hammer-shaped Darkner found in the Dark World.
During this chapter, the characters refer to him as “The Old Man,” and his true identity remains hidden until much later.
Gerson’s Role In Deltarune Chapter 4
Gerson gives the team advice and sells items that help players from his study.
Further, he turns on the lights in the dark maze, scares off enemies, and gives hints to help solve puzzles.
Gerson is especially helpful to Susie. After the Jackenstein fight, he makes her believe in herself by teasing her, which helps her learn how to heal others.
Susie then talks to him alone, thanks him, and tells him that he is the first person she has learned from.
Furthermore, he also gives Susie one of the music notes that help players open a locked door.
Lastly, there is a secret golden piano puzzle in Gerson’s study. If you solve it, you gain access to the Justice Axe, which has a discounted price of $999,999,999.

Gerson also offers to give Susie the axe if she can cut just one of his hairs. This challenge turns into a boss fight when Gerson dodges Susie’s axe and reveals his true identity.
Defeating Gerson Boss In Deltarune Chapter 4
In this boss fight, Susie fights the Gerson, also known as the “Hammer of Justice”, alone.
He also changes the Soul to green and attacks from eight sides, so you have to block attacks from all eight directions.

The boss uses spears, hammers, and special shells that bounce. If Susie gets hit, the Soul turns red and its attacks change.
As Susie fights alone, players need to equip strong armor like the Jevilstail or Dealmaker, and the Absorb Ax to heal a little with each hit.
Players should not use any items, as Gerson steals any you try to use.
Gerson has a hidden “Spare Meter” that fills up when Susie does things that impress him. You can tell he is impressed when small stars appear above his head.

Some actions that impress Gerson are:
- Using OKHeal to heal
- Landing or even missing with Rude Buster
- Attacking Gerson
- Surviving turns 17, 18, 19, and 20
You do not have to beat Gerson by force. If you impress him enough, the battle can end peacefully.
Finally, when players get enough stars, Gerson will advance the battle to the final turn, that is, turn 21.
